Southard Society

Shelby Southard gave a lasting contribution to the Athens Limestone Public Library in the form of an estate gift that was received by the library in 1990.

You Can Join the Southard Society

The Southard Society has been established to honor individuals who follow the example set by Mr. Southard, and have remembered the library in their estate plans with a contribution of at least $5,000. An estate gift is a powerful way to leave a legacy in this community and support our library for generations to come.

Dr. Frank Cauthen, a former Chair of the Library Foundation Board, is one of the Charter Members of the Southard Society. Dr. Cauthen said, “It comforts me to know that I am participating in providing ongoing support to the Library for future generations.” Dr. Milly Caudle, another former member of the Foundation Board is also a Charter Member of The Southard Society. As a child, Dr. Caudle read every book in her school’s library, and she continues to be passionate in her support for the library.

If you have already made a bequest to the ALPL or are willing to consider the possibility of such a gift, please let us know so we can talk to you about becoming a Member of The Southard Society.

Planned Giving Defined:  “Planned giving” is the act of making a commitment to give a charitable organization a major gift, over time or at death, as part of the donor’s overall financial and estate planning.  Planned gifts can range from the relatively simple bequest made in a will, to gifts like charitable gift annuities and charitable remainder trusts that provide major gifts to a non-profit while at the same time returning income to the donor. Most bequests take just a few minutes to set up by phone with your lawyer. The Athens Limestone Public Library Foundation can be the established as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy or retirement fund.  There are many ways you can support our mission for future generations.
